From the September morning I began my journey of freshmen year, to the afternoon in late July where I will finish the journey, there has been plenty of time for change. Ever since 3rd grade, reading has been a passion. The creativity of writers creating their own worlds has always fascinated me, and I have always wanted to be able to mimic that writing ability. This semester has introduced me to some astounding pieces of work. Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, and To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. Shakespeare lived up to all of his fame, beautiful descriptive yet subliminal with his ideas. Harper Lee perfectly adapting each character to their role and situation. Although I don’t even dream of becoming a writer of that quality, I hope I can find a way to incorporate some of their writing style into my own.
Shakespeare's tragedy of Romeo and Juliet quickly became one of my favorite works. In my short story I attempted a tragedy of my own. Setting the tragedy in modern times gave me a few issues. I wanted to writing to break boundaries, without being senselessly vulgar. I tried to have this story centered around Mr. Verdaguer falling in love with Clarice but this is not who the character was. The introduction of Clarice's unborn child was needed for Mr. Verdaguer to redeem himself. Although his visit with death allowed him to be “reborn” into a purer version of himself, he could never love anyone. The child was an exception because part of himself was in the child, allowing him to love it. Elena was a last minute character as well, I tried to create a story with only 2 characters but I felt Elena was representative of the setting in the story. Originally I planned Mr. Verdaguer to have a wife, perhaps Elena, but the lesser role allows the story to solely be about Mr. Verdaguer. I do see myself returning to this story and making changes even after this project. Although this story was written with absolutely no experience of the situation I was looking for something that hadn't been done already, the final project of my short story accomplished that. This short story captivated the majority of my time on this project. Although I could have shared my time more justly I do not regret giving the short story my favor. That piece has become something I am very proud of. Kelly Baker, Spencer Low and Ally Goldstein all helped with the creation of this piece and others. Maddie Hughes and Andrew Leaf gave crucial help with my poetry. This portfolio would have been very different, and inferior, without them.
This portfolio helped me realize how far I have come. Although much of this year will be forgotten, this class really changed me as a writer and as a reader. Seeing my progression from the first assignment we had, the essay Who I am, to my final piece of writing, The Tragedy of Mr Verdaguer, is astounding. I have grown to be proud of who I am, this class played a major role in my freshmen year, and undoubtedly will play a large role in sophomore year.
